How I Developed TheVeryBestMe
I used to be the biggest meat-eating, martini drinking, pill-popping hooligan there ever was. I even became a heavy drinker and took drugs thinking they would make me feel better. Come to think of it, everything I ever did was because I wanted to feel good…..not bad. I believe that ‘s true for all of us. We all do things to make us feel good, even if we think it might hurt our health later.
I followed the best life coaches in the world like Anthony Robbins. Tony is inspiring and has some wonderful messages for living a better life. I read Bill Phillips and practiced his “Body For Life” program. It did wonders for me and really changed my body in a major way in only 90 days. I did the Jenny Craig and the NutriSystems diets. I tried Slim-Fast and WeightWatchers. I strictly followed the “Zone” diet by Barry Sears. I did the 21 Day Fast. I religiously trained every day for a year doing the Royal Canadian Air Force Physical Fitness program. I love Tony Horton’s P90X workout program and I continue to do it almost every day. I read and occasionally reread, “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne because I believe our thoughts do determine what eventually happens to us and that we can be the masters of our destiny. I read, “The Answer” by John Assaraf and continue to apply many of the principles he teaches. You name it and I have tried it all to get on the right path.
Each one of these diet, exercise and self-improvement programs has its’ own special merits and has worked for me to some degree, but none has given me the whole package that I need to live a truly healthy and happy life. I want a strong, lean body and a bright, clear mind. I want a powerful immune system where no disease can ever prevail. I want to look absolutely great and glowing no matter how old I am. I want to feel great and be an example of how others want to live their lives. The bottom line is, “I want to be the very best me I can be and I need a life style program that will give me no less”.
As the years rolled by, I continued to try every promising and popular program I heard about, but after trying so many I finally got discouraged and gave up. That is until about a year ago when my energy, enthusiasm and appearance were hitting new lows and my doctor was telling me that my weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol were hitting new highs. Now I was driven hard by the fear of bad health and aging all at the same time.
I was 66 years old and my body looked horrible compared to what I used to look like. I was getting fat with a big belly and my muscles were shrinking. My skin was sagging and becoming dry, wrinkled and splotchy with blemishes. I couldn’t even tie my shoelaces without struggling and breathing hard. In fact, I couldn’t see my feet when I was standing because my gut was so big. Seeing myself in the mirror made me hurry to put clothes on so I could hide my body and make it look better than it really was. I was embarrassed by my body and I felt lousy more often than I felt good. I could not accept that this is the way life is supposed to be at 66 so I was more determined than ever to regain my health and happiness.
Luckily, I had a big advantage because I already knew what didn’t work, so I kept looking for new clues and after 66 years I finally found the answer. It was far simpler than I ever imagined. All I had to do was look at the way wild animals live in their natural environment where they live healthy lives and don’t get cancer or heart disease or diabetes. And they also are not obese. I concluded that it’s about getting back to the earth and eating the right foods nature provides to make our bodies sing and keep them active and thriving, which in turn, makes our brain and endorphins kick in to where we feel euphoric the way we should be naturally. It’s about keeping our bodies free of the unbelievable pounds and pounds of toxins that build up over the years in our colon from eating the wrong foods. It’s also about keeping our bodies moving and physically strong with the right exercise. And it’s about using the power of our mind to change our habits and create a better life for our selves.
It’s just that easy! It’s about the most simple but powerful life-shaping habits in our lives. It’s about nutrition, detoxification and exercise all held together by simple habit control techniques. That is when I saw the light and realized we all need a program that addresses all four areas combined and not just one. When I combined these four critical areas into my new lifestyle, I started seeing exactly what I was looking for; profound results that went far beyond my expectations and worked 100% of the time.
First, I focused on diet because of the old saying we have all heard for most of our lives that “we are what we eat”. During that time I was eating what I mistakenly considered healthy cooking, but was extremely fortunate to have discovered the recent popular raw plant food diet. Like many people, I was very skeptical, but after learning how raw plant food has dramatically changed so many peoples lives, I quickly changed my diet to at least 80% raw foods and less than 20% cooked foods. I gradually reduced and then finally eliminated refined sugars, processed starches, alcohol and meat and dairy. Now I eat close to 100% raw foods.
I also exercised for at least one hour every day by doing my P90X routine or taking a long hike in the mountains or a bike ride on the beach or anything that got me outdoors where my mind was cleared out and my body was challenged. Vigorous exercise is truly underrated. It not only helps keep you healthy and strong, but it keeps you young and feeling absolutely amazing.
Another important area I discovered is detoxification and how we live every day with 10 pounds or more of dangerous toxins that have accumulated over a lifetime in our large intestine. Many people find it uncomfortable to talk about this basic truth, but the fact is that it is very real and we do have a choice and the ability to repair any damage we have already caused before it gets any worse. The goal is to get rid of this lifelong accumulation of toxic waste before it gets rid of you.
The best way to keep your colon clean is to always eat a diet that is high in water content and fiber like the raw food plant based diet and to regularly schedule a colonic with a certified hydrotherapist using gravity closed systems.
I believe my biggest discovery came when Holly and I learned how immensely powerful dark leafy greens are. We are constantly researching information about food and recently were very fortunate to learn about Victoria Boutenko and her creation and development of the biggest food breakthrough of our time…..the green smoothie. Victoria discovered that greens are the most powerful food on the planet and yet we only eat an average of less than 3% because they taste bitter and are hard to digest. The green smoothie fixes these problems real fast and real easily. Because of the great taste and easy digestion of the green smoothie, dark leafy greens are now at least 40% of my diet and I can’t begin to tell you how incredible I feel all the time. The greens have taken me to a much higher level of nutrition and a much higher level of feelinggreat. I truly cannot imagine my diet getting any better.
20 years ago, I was diagnosed with an incurable neurological disorder called “dystonia” that is similar to Parkinson’s because of all the muscle tremors. The dystonia also caused my voice to become weak and difficult to hear. I was told that my dystonia would be permanent and very painful and would continue to progress and get worse. The gold standard treatment I followed for nearly 20 years was a set of about 20 deep injections every three months of 25,000 units of botox into the hyperactive muscles in my neck. I never liked the idea of putting this massive amount of poison into my body, but I had little choice based on what my doctors were telling me.
I was doing so well with my new lifestyle that I decided to eliminate the botox injections and see if my new program would help. Here is the great news. It is now 1 year since my last set of injections and my pain is 80% gone. My tremors and muscle pulling have also improved about 80% with no medication! And my voice came back. Since we are on the subject of incurable diseases, I should mention that as I grew older and saw more and more family and friends stricken with cancer and heart disease, I developed a great passion for improving our health and the quality of our lives.
